Workshops 2018/19 on the concept of the “koshas” in yoga: “From the physical body to subtle inner joy”
The concept of the “pancha koshas” or 5 sheaths, which is described in the Upanishads, presents the idea that being human means much more than just having a body and various emotions. The koshas can be imagined like layers, one over the other, covering the most inner essence of the individual. Each workshop will focus on one of the koshas and with the help of various exercises, also with meditation, we will explore them and understand how they are connected to each other and influence our whole being. This process will support us on our yoga path, helping to develop a deeper understanding of ourselves and of others, so that we feel more connected with the world we are living in, as it is.
The 2018/19 cycle includes 5 full-day workshops. They can be attended separately or as a package; each of them includes body and breathing exercises, relaxation as well as meditation.
All students are welcome, from beginners to more advanced. The class is taught in Czech and/or English, depending on the needs of the participants.
- All workshops take place in the studio ELEMENT, Opletalova 27 (in the courtyard), Prague 1, always from 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. Morning and afternoon sessions will take 2.5 hours each and there will be a lunch break in between.
- Price: 950.- Kč for an individual workshop, and 4250.- Kč for the whole package.

Annamaya kosha – 6th October, 2018
The first kosha is our physical body, which represents the material aspect of our being and is our anchor in the world. The body also contains all the other koshas. Bodily sensations usually fill a large part of our mind; physical well-being or pain greatly affect our inner state. With the help of various Yoga exercises we can improve strengh, flexibility and also the ability to relax, creating a healthy and vital body, which is the prerequisite for the good functioning of all the other koshas.
Pranamaya kosha – 1st December, 2018
The second layer is the energetic body. We call the life energy in Yoga “prana” and experience it mostly in our breathing. Prana allows all living processes in us to function in a meaningful way. This kosha is also closely related to our suppressed emotions. Working with various physical exercises and breathing techniques, we will release the diaphragm and maybe also suppressed emotions, so that the breathing becomes more free again and we can take in more prana.
Manomaya kosha – 26th January, 2019
The third layer includes part of our mind’s activity, especially the identification of sensory impressions from the outside world, but also the area in which words, concepts, thoughts and images are created. The layer of this kosha penetrates into each cell and has an activating, paralyzing or balancing effect on the whole organism, depending on what we are thinking. With the help of various asanas and meditations we will observe how our thoughts are created, and learn how to find more freedom to decide how and what we think.
Vijnanamaya kosha – 23rd March, 2019
The fourth kosha is also part of our mental activity, but it includes the ability to create abstract thoughts and concepts. In this kosha we find higher intelligence and intuition. Friendship, respect, love and compassion are rooted here, and we will be able to understand the isolating effect of many of our concepts, assessments or calculations on our perception. Developing the quality of mindfulness through meditation will help us to find a deeper understanding that does not just come from the mind, but from the heart.
Anandamaya kosha -18th May, 2019
Anandamaya kosha builds the last layer, which, according to yoga philosophy, covers our innermost core. This state of bliss or inner joy can not be achieved by any certain techniques or exercises, we can just prepare the conditions to let it happen. According to the concept of the koshas, the fifth kosha is already within us. We do not have to strive for it, we just need to reveal it and the path to ananda leads through the realisation of all the other layers of the koshas.
Intensive summer yoga week 2019
This intensive week is an opportunity to experience Yoga at a much deeper level than it is possible in the weekly classes. We will exercise for one week every evening for 2,5 hours and have time to experience various body- and breathing exercises and relaxation. Each day we will work with a different yogic energy and get to know the concept of the „vayus“. We will better understand how these aspects complement each other so that we can bring a greater balance into our Yoga sessions and also into our daily lives.
The class is taught in Czech and/or English, depending on the needs of the participants.
- Monday, 26.8. – Friday, 30.8. 2019, 19.00 – 21.30 h, Studio ELEMENT, Opletalova 27, Prague 1.
